2021-05-06 Improper proposition?

“I have been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father, your mother, and the land of your birth, and have come to a people that you didn’t know before. May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

She lay at his feet until the morning, then she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, “Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.”

Why shouldn't it be known what it is that she did?

A good name is more to be desired than great wealth, and to be respected is better than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:1

Ruth's good name preceded her. When (bachelor) Boaz met her, he blessed her, asking God to fully repay her for her kindness. As a wealthy man, he encouraged her to glean at his fields, where he knew it would be safe.

When Ruth (at the behest of Naomi) propositions Boaz, he shows that he has already put some thought into the arrangement. To preserve their reputation, he has her leave before notice (though not before morning). God does reward her, having her name in the line of David, in the line of Christ.

Keeping a good name takes intentional work. God, give the wisdom to keep a good name.
